Senior Mentor ProgramCivic Enterprises is a prominently public benefit organization and is searching for volunteers to participate in Senior Mentor Program. Volunteer now and participate in our program – help 2nd and 3rd grade elementary school students to improve on reading skills, work together with other mentors and be part of a volunteer community! No teaching experience necessary!

Senior Mentor Program

Individual Member Position Description

Senior Mentor Program Individual Members provide academic and social support to young students in after school programs.

Members tutor students one-on-one in reading during 45 minutes sessions in an effort to enhance the student’s reading skills and to give the student the opportunity to develop a caring relationship with an older adult. Members are part of a Senior Mentor Program team at school sites and receive daily support from the Senior Mentor Program Coordinator.


Qualifications:

  • 55+ years old- Willingness to learn and contribute to an intergenerational environment
  • Commitment to working with students and building relationships with young people
  • NO teaching experience necessary


Responsibilities:

  • Arrive to site at least 10 to 15 minutes prior to coaching session
  • Pick out a book (provided by the program coordinator) and read it prior to the coaching session and review and/or prepare the accompanying Session Plan
  • Follow the Session Plan and complete the comments section of it
  • Phone in advance if the coach will be late or cannot make it
  • Must commit to volunteer for the entire school year
  • Must follow school site rules
  • Deepen mentoring skills
  • Expand tutoring techniques
  • Learn conflict resolution and behavior management strategies
  • Increase your sensitivity to different age groups
  • Attend monthly team meetings and workshops
